It is not same as motion sickness or lightheadedness, as most people use the terms interchangeably. Vertigo is actually a specific symptom of varying diseases related to inner ear, brain, or sensory nerve pathway.

Vertigo may be a temporary or long term symptom, depending upon the medical condition which is causing it. The treatment of vertigo depends upon the vertigo- associated underlying disease. Acute onset vertigos usually last from 24-48 hrs.

Broadly vertigo can be divided into two categories- peripheral vertigo and central vertigo

Peripheral vertigo is caused due to problem in inner ear or vestibular nerve, while central vertigo is caused due to problem in brain, specifically in cerebellum.

Peripheral vertigo causes

Maximum vertigos that occur come under peripheral vertigo, and their leading causes are-

  1. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)- These are brought on due to specific changes in the position of head.

  1. Meniere’s disease- This is the disease of the middle ear in which there is formation of fluid in the middle ear, which leads to vertigo, and symptoms like ringing in ears and hearing loss.

  1. Acute peripheral vestibulopathy- In this there happens acute inflammation of the inner ear, leading to sudden onset of vertigo.

Some rare causes of peripheral vertigo could be

  • Perilymphatic fistulas
  • Cholesteatoma erosion
  • Otosclerosis

Central vertigo causes

Causes that may lead to central vertigo are

  • Stroke
  • Migraine
  • Tumour in the cerebellum
  • Multiple sclerosis

Other than these there can be some other conditions that may be associated with vertigo like-

  • Head injury
  • Ear injury
  • Herpes in or around the ears
  • Syphilis
  • Osteosclerosis
  • Ataxia
  • Acoustic neuroma

Nausea and dizziness are also very common during pregnancy. It is caused due to hormonal changes during pregnancy as they affect the characteristic of fluid in the body.
