What is ulcerative colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, in which there is chronic inflammation of the inner lining of the large intestines, that comprises of colon and rectum.
Due to inflammation, the cells on the inner lining die, developing tiny ulcers on the inner lining of the large intestine, causing the bowel movements to take place very quickly, followed by frequent evacuation. Inflammation usually spreads from rectum in the upward direction towards the colon. The ulcers may cause discharge of mucus and pus in the stool.
Men and women are equally predisposed to ulcerative colitis. This disease is equally reported in people of all age groups, but it mostly begins during adolescence and is commonly diagnosed between 15 and 35 years of age. After 50 years, again the prevalence of this disease increases, especially in men.
There is no defined treatment for ulcerative colitis in conventional methods of medicine, but the best homeopathy doctor can provide very effective and efficient treatments in these cases.
The exact cause of ulcerative colitis is still unknown. But it is believed that, immune system malfunction is the most probable cause for ulcerative colitis. In which, the immune system while fighting back the viruses and bacterias start killing its own cells in the digestive tract too. But it’s still not clear that why immune system selectively affects the large intestine cells only, and not the others.
Previously it was suspected that stress and diet may play a role in causing it, but now it is believed that these factors only add up or aggravate the symptoms, but do not cause the disease.
It is also believed that heredity has a role to play in passing over this disease in generations as it is common in members of the same family, but in most of the cases family history of ulcerative colitis is not found.

- People having the family history of ulcerative colitis are at higher risk of developing this disease
Some possible complications that may develop due to ulcerative colitis are:
