Polycystic ovarian disease or PCOD is a condition when the ovary is unable to eject the immature eggs and they turn into cysts. Small follicular cysts are formed within the ovaries.

Maximum number of people get confused that PCOD and polycystic ovarian syndrome are same. Now in India, every 1women out of ten are suffering from PCOD where some remains undiagnosed.

The actual cause of PCOD is not clear. Most cases of PCOD are majorly a cause of lifestyle. Unhealthy living is what mostly leads to hormonal imbalances which then cause such conditions.

Other causes may include heredity, excess insulin, obesity etc.

The risk factors for PCOD are: have a mother or sister with PCOD, higher level of androgen hormone.

Some women start seeing symptoms around the time of their first periods. Others only discover they have PCOD after they’ve gained weight. The most common symptoms are irregular periods, heavy bleeding, acne, weight gain, darkening of the skin, and periodical headaches.

Irregular periods is often the first tell-tale sign that all is not well with hormones, making this as one of the most important symptoms of polycystic ovarian disease.

Fatigue is another leading PCOD symptom. Imbalanced hormones are the reason behind fatigue in this disease.

No single test can determine the presence of PCO, but a doctor can diagnose the condition through medical history, physical examination that include a pelvic exam, and blood tests to measure hormone, cholesterol, and glucose level.

Although PCOD cannot be completely avoided but it can prevented to a certain extent with sensible measures. It has been observed that proper diet, yoga, meditation, and exercise help a lot to decrease the symptoms and severity of the disease.

Regular exercise helps a person to stay fit and healthy. If a person is having the symptoms of PCOD, she can help them with regular exercise.
