What is obesity?
Obesity is a complex condition which means that the person is having too much fat in the body. This needs to be understood that obesity and being overweight are two different conditions. Obesity is particularly linked to excess fat in the body, while extra weight can come from muscle, bones, fat, and/or body water. But in broader terms both mean that the person’s body weight is more than what is termed normal for a person according to his or her height.
An adult is considered obese if he is having a BMI 30 or more, according to Centre for disease control and prevention(CDC). Basal metabolic index(BMI) is the measure of ideal body size for a person, considering his height and weight. People may become obese due to combination of several reasons like inherited factors, environment, personal diet choices, limited movement, sedentary work styles, lack of exercise, etc. Obesity actually results if the person eats more amount of calories than what he burns.
Obesity can increase the risk of diseases, like stroke, diabetes, arthritis, heart diseases and certain cancers. Losing a small percent of weight, i.e about 5-10% can significantly reduce or delay the chances of many diseases.
In most of the cases obesity happens when a person eats more calories than what he burns on daily basis. These extra calories keep on adding up in the body, resulting into obesity. Other common causes include unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.
But sometimes there are other factors and medical conditions that may be involved for causing obesity, in which the person is helpless in gaining weight. These may include-
- Some people are genetically predisposed to become fat
- The decreased metabolism rate in people who are aged may result into extra fat gain
- Decreased amount of sleep can cause hormonal imbalances and make a person hungry and crave for high calorie foods
- Weight gained during pregnancy is difficult to be shed off and may result into obesity
