What is jaundice?
Jaundice, also known as icterus describes a medical condition in which the skin and white of the eyes become yellow or greenish due to high levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced by the liver due to breakdown of the red blood cells. Normally bilirubin is excreted by the liver along with the dead cells. In the case of jaundice, the bilirubin level rises above normal in the blood, causing yellow discolouration of the skin and whites of the eyes, along with some body secretions.
Jaundice is usually the sign of some underlying medical condition, that may involve abnormal heme metabolism, liver dysfunction, biliary tract obstruction, problem with the functioning of red blood cells, gallbladder or pancreatic disorders. The common associated symptoms of jaundice include itching, pale faeces and dark coloured urine.
Jaundice is common in infants during the first week of life, but it can happen to anyone at any age. Jaundice can be managed by treating the underlying cause.
Approach of homeopathy for the treatment of jaundice depends upon the underlying cause. Homeopathy medicines work wonderfully in all types of jaundice, and Dr Ashok Choudhary specialises in treating the cases of jaundice effectively along with their underlying causes.
Bilirubin is the waste product of break down of the red blood cells. The liver is responsible for filtering the waste products from the blood. If the liver is damaged or is not functioning properly, bilirubin does not reach the digestive tract of the body, from where it is excreted out, and is also responsible for the brown colour of the faeces.
There might also be the other conditions that may increase the level of bilirubin in the blood, like overproduction of bilirubin or too much destruction of the red blood cells.
In adults, jaundice may be caused due to-
- Alcohol misuse
- Liver or pancreatic cancer
- Cirrhosis of liver
- Hepatitis A, B, C, D or E
- G6PD deficiency
- Bile duct obstruction
- Sickle cell anaemia
- Acute pancreatitis
- ABO incompatibility reaction
- Drug induced immune haemolytic anaemia
- Other blood disorders like haemolytic anaemia
Sign and symptoms
The most common sign of jaundice is yellowish discolouration of the white part of the eyes and skin. The sign and symptoms usually depend upon the underlying cause of jaundice, and how slowly or fast the illness has progressed. Some common sign and symptoms depending upon the reason behind it may include-
- Dark coloured urine
- Clay coloured stools
- Itching of the skin
- Abdominal pains
- Flu like symptoms
Jaundice caused by biliary tract or pancreatic cancers, usually present with abdominal pain.
The doctor will carefully take the medical history of the patient, along with physical examination to look for yellowish discolouration of the skin and white of the eye.
Doctor may suggest blood tests to determine the amount of bilirubin in the blood, along with the possible causes for jaundice, like hepatitis. The doctor may suggest other diagnostic tests like-
- Liver function test, to check the levels or certain proteins and enzymes in the blood.
- Complete blood count, to look for the indication of haemolytic anaemia.
- Imaging tests like abdominal ultrasound and CT scan.
- Liver and pancreas biopsies
Homeopathy works wonderfully in almost all the cases of jaundice unless there is any emergency situation like obstructive jaundice. Homeopathy medicines can very efficiently control the symptoms produced in the cases of jaundice, along with working on the underlying cause.
Dr. Ashok Choudhary specialises in treating the cases which present with symptoms of jaundice. He is expert in diagnosing the underlying cause of the symptoms and treat accordingly, using the holistic approach of homeopathy to give most natural and complete cure in cases of jaundice
