What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is common inflammatory disease of the gums or gingiva. Gingivitis causes redness, irritation and swelling of the gingiva. Gingivitis is a milder and non destructive form of the disease but may lead to serious gum disease, known as periodontitis and eventually tooth loss, if left untreated.

Gingivitis usually occurs if the person does not maintain proper oral hygiene which causes bacterial accumulation and formation of a film of plaque on the teeth.

Gingivitis often resolves by simply maintaining proper oral hygiene, like brushing the teeth frequently or at least two times a day and flossing. Antiseptic mouthwashes can also prove beneficial in such cases. Milder forms of gingivitis may even go unnoticed by the person but if the conditions worsen, it should immediately be addressed to avoid complications.

Homoepathic medicines are very effective and beneficial in the cases of gingivitis. Patient can reach for best homeopathy clinic around him or her for complete medical solutions in homeopathy for the oral problems.

Causes

The commonest cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. When the starch and sugar in the mouth is not properly cleaned off, it interacts with bacterias in the mouth and lead to formation of a think film called plaques. The teeth attach via a small space in the gums called sulcus. The plaque and food gets trapped in these spaces which leads to inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis.

Plaque hardens with time and form tartar. It is difficult to remove and gives protective covering to bacterias, further worsening the condition.

Plaque and tartar when left for longer period causes regular irritation of the gingiva and thus lead to its inflammation. The gums become swollen and bleed easily. If this condition is not treated, it may cause more serious disease called periodontitis and eventually tooth loss.

Other causes and risk factors may include-

  • Hormonal changes that may occur during menarchae, menopause or pregnancy.
  • Smoking and chewing tobacco
  • Crooked teeth
  • Poorly fitting dental appliances
  • Broken tooth fillings
  • Diet poor in vit C
  • Some diseases like cancer, diabetes, HIV
  • Certain medications like oral contraceptives, steroids, anticonvulsants, chemotherapy, calcium chamber blockers, etc.
  • Genetic factors

Complications

If left untreated, gingivitis may spread to underlying tissues and bones and lead to more serious condition called periodontitis.

According to some researchers the bacterias that cause periodontitis may enter the bloodstream and affect heart, lungs, and other organs. Chronic gingivitis has also been seen associated to some systemic diseases like diabetes, respiratory diseases, coronary artery diseases, stroke and rheumatoid arthritis.

Trench mouth or necrotising ulcerative gingivitis is a more severe form of gingivitis, which presents with symptoms like painful, ulcerated bleeding gums.

Diagnosis
