What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a common condition, in which there is inflammation and tenderness in one or more joints in the body. Arthritis is a general term for atleast 100 medical conditions that involve inflammation in the joints and tissues that surround the joints, with different causes and treatment. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Other common medical conditions related to arthritis are gout and fibromyalgia.
Cartilage tissue is present at the end of the bones, which helps the joints to remain intact and ease movement by providing a layer of cushion between the bones, so that they do not directly slide on each other. In the case of osteoarthritis this layer breaks down causing inflammation and pain in the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the body itself starts attaching the joints.
Some forms of arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus can involve multiple organs in the body and cause very widespread symptoms.
Arthritis usually causes pain, stiffness and inflammation in the joints. Though, it can affect people from all ages and sex, women are more prone to develop this condition as compared to men and it is more common in people above the age of 65years.

Cartilage is a firm, yet flexible connective tissue, that is present at the end of the bones, which facilitate movement of bones against each other by acting as a cushion. Damage, injury or reduction in the cartilage tissue of the bone is responsible for many types of arthritic medical conditions.
Osteoarthritis is one of the commonest arthritis, which is caused by natural wear and tear of the joints. Though, an infection or injury can fasten the breakdown of cartilage. People having family history of osteoarthritis and who are obese, are more at risk of developing this.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, in which body’s immune system attack the synovium tissue present on the joints. Synovium produces a lubricating liquid, called synovial fluid, to prevent the friction between two joints, and also to provide nourishment for the cartilage. The destruction of synovium eventually leads to destruction of bones, as well as cartilage tissue between the bones, causing rheumatoid arthritis.
